But then, Rai Kedarnath, the counsellor of then Chief Commissioner of Delhi and founder of Ramjas College, explained to the Education Minister that naming the university so might have catastrophic effects, as there was no guarantee of the university succeeding in the future, and failure would certainly antagonise the Prince and he suggested the name by which it is known today.[4]

It was established as Madrasatul Uloom Musalmanan-e-Hind in 1875.[5] The college started on 24 May 1875.[6] The Anglo–Indian statesman Syed Ahmad Khan founded the predecessor of AMU, the Muhammadan Anglo Oriental College, in 1875 having already established two schools.[7] The movement of Muslim awakening associated with Syed Ahmad Khan and M.A.O. College came to be known as Aligarh Movement.[8] He considered competence in English and "Western sciences" necessary skills for maintaining Muslims' political influence, especially in Northern India. Khan's image for the college was based on his visit to Oxford and Cambridge and he wanted to establish an education system similar to the British model.[9]
A committee was formed by the name of foundation of Muslim College and asked people to fund generously. The then Viceroy and Governor General of India Sir Lord North Brook gave a donation of Rs 10000 and the Lt. Governor of the North Western Provinces contributed Rs 1000 and by March 1874 the fund for the college stood at Rs 153492 and 8 anas.[6]
In the beginning the college was affiliated with the University of Calcutta for the matriculation examination but became an affiliate of Allahabad University in 1885. In 1877 the school was raised to college level and Lord Lytton laid the foundation stone of the college building.[6]

Allahabad University

Allahabad University has always occupied an esteemed place among the universities of India for over a century now. Established on 23rd September 1887, it is the fourth oldest university of India after Calcutta, Bombay and Madras University. The credit for conceiving a large Central College at Allahabad, eventually to develop into a University, is due to Sir William Muir, then Lt. Governor of United Provinces. As a result of his initiative the foundation stone of the Muir Central College (named after him) was laid on Dec. 9 1873 by His Excellency Lord Northbrook. Sir William Muir said on that occasion: "The establishment of a central college at Allahabad has been my earnest desire ever since I assumed my present office. Shortly after coming here I found that a strong wish prevailed among the chief people of the place for a better means of education at Allahabad; and being myself deeply impressed with the same conviction, I took occasion at the first Darbar which I held here to urge upon those present the necessity of showing that they were sincere and in earnest, by contributing to the work.
The University of Allahabad, informally known as Allahabad University, is a public central university located in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. Established on 23 September 1887, it is the fourth oldest University in India.[1] Its origins lie in the Muir Central College, named after Lt. Governor of North-Western ProvincesSir William Muir in 1876, who suggested the idea of a Central University at Allahabad, which later evolved to the present university.[2][3] At one point it was called the "Oxford of the East".[4] On 24 June 2005 its Central University status was restored through the University Allahabad Act 2005[5] of the Parliament of India.[6]
